bulbArts proudly presents: shireen alborno

from the winner of our transience challenge...

the five images that i am sharing are from two different series that grew off one another.

the first series is field study.
it explores the depths of southern culture in my surrounding areas
as a form of documentary to the beautiful and subtle landscapes that i see every day.

the second series is entitled go back to your country.
it was sparked by the first series in that i take the southern aspect
and incorporate foreign islamic imagery to invoke a sense of questioning to the viewer.
the title in itself is a pun which forces the audience to think deeper
into the racial comment "go back to your country"

announcing the winners of the transience challenge

i want to thank everyone who submitted to the transience photo challenge
there were many excellent submissions and
i thoroughly enjoyed seeing how each artist rendered the concept of transience in still photography.

the strength in our contest winner's image came not only from it's subject matter,

but in the technique used for producing the final piece.
this series of partially overlapping exposures strings together what may be read as a brief narrative;
a transition from an eerie wooded landscape into a cave-like shelter.
both atmospheres attesting to the inherent impermanence of our natural world.

the ephemeral quality of objects and spaces has always intrigued me
and often finds its way into my own work.
it is an underlying truth for all things,
though it is more apparent in nature than it is in architecture.

- jake selvidio

bulbArts proudly presents: the transience challenge exhibition

this challenge was one that was close to my heart.
photography and transience just go hand in hand in my mind.
my own personal work always seems to deal with a subject that is fleeting.
it was refreshing to learn that so many young photographers feel the same connection.

the thing i enjoyed most about the submissions
was how varied the viewpoints were.
some of the photographs were dark and solemn,
a reminiscence of sorts,
while others were light and cheerful
and some, just so full of hope.
i imagine our juror is struggling right this moment
with his decision for that very reason!

remember, this concept was supplied not by me,
but by the followers of the blog,
the challengers who participate regularly,
by you.

please enjoy the exhibition... transience

Spring 2012 Photography Challenge... Transience

hello bulb followers.

it is that time again... photo challenge time!

based upon the suggestions of our followers,
we have settled on the idea of transience for our topic.
transience can be described as the state or quality of
passing with time or being ephemeral or fleeting.

for me, spring brings fresh weather,
the desire to go somewhere,
to see something new,
to make a clean start,
but spring is short and that feeling doesn't last forever.
transience seems to fit well into both this season
and the medium of photography, which is time based.

explore the idea of transience on your own
and interpret in photographs!

the challenge is open to all photographers
of all levels of experience,
using all types of photographic media.
(you may use film, alternative processes, digital, video stills, cell phones, etc.)

*submit your images to bulbArts via an email to sarahcbaron@gmail.com
*please put the word "transience" in the subject line
*include in your email your full name, mailing & email address
and specify the student/amateur or professional/experienced category
*images should be a resolution of 72ppi, 10 inches on the longest side
*images should be flattened jpeg files
*please title these files with your full name and number them (SarahBaron1.jpg)
*limit 2 images per photographer

*** the deadline for the transience photo challenge is June 1, 2012

bulbArts will curate and exhibit an online exhibition.
the submissions will be sent anonymously to our guest juror, jake selvidio.
mr. selvidio is a photographic artist, designer and educator based in new york city!
he will choose two winners from the amateur category and one from the professional.

all winners will be given a feature on the blog
to exhibit a larger selection of their photographic work.

the first place winner in the amateur category will, for the first time in bulbArts history,
also receive a great prize... a cool, custom-made camera strap from Couch!
this brand new camera strap is upcycled from material intended to reupholster volkswagen seats.
it is red, it is unique, it is pretty darn cool!  (thanks to amy lorino for the donation)

first prize is this awesome couch camera strap!
its is a brand new, custom-made strap made from volkswagen vinyl.

we look forward to your transience image!!

once again, bulbArts proudly presents... Mike Baker

here are a few images from mike baker,
one of our favorite challenge participants
and one of our resolution challenge winners!

i am interested in the tug-of-war that we humans have with out conflicting interests
to consume the earth's resources while conserving its wonders.
this series shows the ugliness, futility, and silliness
of our attempts to control the natural world around us.

bulb photo presents: the resolution challenge exhibition

it took months for our photographers to interpret
the theme and create photographs that spoke of that interpretation.

it took months to collect the submission in the midst of semesters ending,
semesters beginning, finals, vacations & holidays.

it took a little longer than usual to sort and curate and judge the submissions
because there were so many wonderful photographs sent our way.

after four months of hard work from everyone involved,
sixty plus submissions from forty plus artists,
we at bulb are thrilled to present the exhibition
of photographic works chosen for the resolution challenge.

please enjoy & visit bulb soon to see who has won the latest photo challenge!
