bulb photo presents: the resolution challenge exhibition

it took months for our photographers to interpret

the theme and create photographs that spoke of that interpretation.

it took months to collect the submission in the midst of semesters ending,

semesters beginning, finals, vacations & holidays.

it took a little longer than usual to sort and curate and judge the submissions

because there were so many wonderful photographs sent our way.

after four months of hard work from everyone involved,

sixty plus submissions from forty plus artists,

we at bulb are thrilled to present the exhibition

of photographic works chosen for the resolution challenge.

(there are two categories to ensure that professors aren't competing with their students)

submission guidelines:

*images should be resized to 8 inches on the longest side at 72 dpi (roughly 900k)

*files should be flattened jpegs

*files should be labeled with your first and last name and numbered (mine would be SarahBaron1.jpg)

*email submissions to sarahcbaron@gmail.com with the word "resolution" in the subject line

*in your email, specify either the "Student/Amateur" or "Professional" category

*please limit your submissions to 3 per person

she has an mfa in photography from pratt institute in brooklyn and

a ba in journalism from the george washington university in washington, dc.

she currently lives and works in brooklyn, new york.

and watching me photograph many a squished creature,
its seems that my banker has picked up a few things from this photographer.

he came back from his annual fall hunting trip with some hauntingly beautiful images...
(these aren't for the faint of heart, but they really are quite lovely)

this selection of work is a very short, untitled series: a study of produce.

it all began with a mad dash to the grocery store the morning before a wet plate collodion workshop.

that asparagus was a revelation.

this small body of work is a simple exploration into subject matter and still life.

in the past, i have always explored highly personal avenues.

this is just the beginning of a new relationship with what i photograph.

christy was born and has lived most of her life in charlotte, nc.

she has experienced many things for being so young and, while attending uncc to become a photographer,

she has learned that art is a way for her to express herself.

this year has been very exciting for me.

i am currently taking the black and white printing class at uncc.

this year's projects have been incredibly experimental and creative.

these images were all taken this semester and i feel they are my strongest work so far.

i love finding unusual and interesting images and creating a narrative with them.

i also excel at making portraits for people. i have been focusing more on ethereal and surreal photography.

an image that evokes emotion is necessary in my work.

i feel there is a need for the viewer to have a more direct relationship

with images and impose their own life experiences into each piece.

here is the first installment of posts featuring the stand out photographers
from the life & death photo challenge...

amelia fletcher is currently attending uncc, working on a bfa with a concentration in photography.
her future plans include attending a graduate program where she will learn her mfa.
fletcher enjoys many different art mediums, but photography is her passion...
whether it is working with film, digital or an alternative process.
she is inspired by the natural world, history, stories from the past, human perception and memory.

the works presented here today are from a series called, "these reckless conditions".

this body of imagery explores the fragile relationship between humans and the environment,
and our senseless efforts to collect and control it.
i have always been fascinated with the natural world.
most of my childhood was spent playing in creeks and woods near our home,
collecting relics of nature untouched and unaltered by human hands.
i have always felt a connection to nature's tangible contents and the land around me.

symbolically and historically birds are of a particular fascination.
the more i understand my work,
the more i draw associations to the similarities between the human species and that of the legendary aves.
birds are revered as one of the most intelligent creatures in the world with complex social structures
resembling that of humans.
they have been represented in diverse and prominent roles in folklore and religion
across the world, since the beginnings of human history.
in myth and culture they have been portrayed as messengers, deities, universal guardians, and prophets of truth.
birds communicate using song and body language.
the vast majority are monogamous and they are remarkably equipped to remember precise locations during migration.
although humans have protected, domesticated, and sustained different breeds of birds,
conversely, they have caused population decrease and extinction of countless species.

because of the process used in the creation of these images,
the tiniest of detail and delicate elements of each specimen are visible,
transforming the small and frail into a significant symbol of our existence.

Shutter is an open call of all photo-based works to all

Undergraduate and graduate college students in the Southeast region.

All content and photographic media is welcome

(alternative processes, traditional black andwhite, and/or digital methods, etc.).

JUROR--Antonio Martinez

Antonio teaches photography at Southern Illinois University Carbondale.

He attended Creighton University, where he earned a BFA in painting and

then pursued an MFA in photography atEast Carolina University.

His Near the Egress video has been shown in over 25 international and national festivals

and was featured in PDN magazine in 2010 and on platestopixels.com.

life & death photo challenge: announcement of "winning" submissions

i want to thank everyone who submitted to the life & death photo challenge.

this theme is always captivating and can be approached in so many ways.

i enjoyed looking at each artist’s different perspective.

life and death are subjects that have always been at the forefront of the artist’s mind;

whether we are trying to deal with the loss of a loved one,

capture forever a moment that is gone or

cling to the hope of a new beginning.

personally, i was most attracted to the more abstract images;

the photographs that were not quite so literal yet held a dreamlike, eerie essence instead.

some appeared almost as if they had come out of the world of edgar allen poe

(quoth the raven, nevermore)!

it was those images that portrayed the mysterious and esoteric qualities of both life and death

that were able to catch and keep my eye.

with that being said, I also connected to the literal nature of amelia fletcher’s

second image of the tiny, deceased bird, taking something that can, at first,

seem shocking or even grotesque and presenting it in a manner that is both beautiful and poetic.

i've been busy with, well, life

this "dark" collection belongs to mike baker.
he tells a story of either a really good night...
or a really bad night!

By day, I toil in a software factory. Its a good living, but while one lobe of my brain is solving logic problems, the other is taking photographs. Photography is a creative outlet, which I also hope to apply towards environmental and social projects in the future.

This project about night life and debauchery was done as a class exercise in my on-going and never-ending education of art and imagery.

When I was growing up, I felt like photographs were my connection to the world outside of my town.

I started exploring my own world through photography when I was quite young.

My mom bought me a green Polaroid camera.

I didn't have any human models, so I would pose my toys,

stuffed animals,

my sisters Barbies,

whatever I could find.

Those are my earliest memories of working with models in front of my lens.

Interestingly enough, I am basically doing the same thing now as professional adult!

People fascinate me more than anything else and

I love creating images that share that fascination with others.

and here are the results of the dark secret challenge...

I enjoyed seeing everyone's 'dark secrets'. Dark secrets, unlike gossip, are those that no one really knows about; the ones that are so secret that we only reveal them to our closest companions, if at all. They are told in code to help maintain their secrecy and are hidden in the deepest part of our minds. Of the works submitted, I gravitated torwards those pictures that represented a secret held, but not revealed. Some of the more literal approaches were exciting. In the end, I wanted to spend more time with the selected works and continuously question the nature of the secret being depicted. I pondered my own deep secrets and how they are manifested in my life.

bulb had such success with last summer's cell phone photo competition
that we have decided to once again offer you the opportunity to
interpret, create & have your photographs seen!

bulb presents: the winter 2011 photo challenge ... dark secret!
the topic was chosen by the students in the art institute's photo design class.
now it is up to you to get creative with concepts and all that great photo tech stuff!
remember, there is no wrong answer to a question like this!
your interpretation of ... dark secret is just that, YOUR interpretation.

the challenge is open to image makers of all levels, backgrounds & interests.
photographs from all types of cameras will be considered for judging...
cell phones, video stills, traditional film & digital camera, alternative processes, pinhole and toy cameras!

... dark secret submissions will be due Friday, March 18, 2011
resizing and renaming files in image editing software will help me stay organized & get the contest posted faster. you can help speed the process along by sticking to the following file specifications:
72 dpi jpegs, about 700k labeled with your first and last name (sarahbaron1.jpg or sarahbaron2.jpg)

you can email your image submissions directly to me at sarahcbaron@gmail.com

limit 2 submissions per person, please.

once all of the images have been submitted, i will curate the online show.
then our special guest juror will decide the top three images.
the three winners will each receive a feature on the blog to post their own work!

... dark secret will be judged by mr. sean carroll! we are pretty lucky to have him participating.

sean carroll is an artist and arts administrator based in brooklyn, ny, and a current artist-in-residence at the elizabeth foundation for the arts in new york city. he manages the artist residencies at lower manhattan cultural council (lmcc), overseeing two programs that transform vacant space in nyc's financial district into studio and rehearsal space for visual and performing artists and writers. he moonlights as a bike tour guide, and in his spare time enjoys taking pictures and train trips, reading maps, and riding his bicycle in and around new york city. his works have been included in exhibitions in new york, washington, dc, northern virginia, and north carolina. sean went to college at american university in washington, dc and received a mfa in photography from pratt institute in brooklyn.

it is brag time for the bulb again.
this time, one of my aich students has work in an juried exhibition
and we would like you all to attend the opening reception!

jasmin hejazi has beautiful photographs in the showdown at the hart witzen gallery.
it is an interdisciplinary visual art competition for emerging artists.
the winner will be determined by the votes of you, the patron.

the opening reception and vote is
friday, february 4th from 6 to 10.
apparently, there will be a bonfire!
when there is art, refreshments, judgement and fire involved,
i cannot think of one good reason not to go!

so head out to noda next friday and look for the flames!

bringing in the new year with photographs

happy new year bulb followers!

reynolds & i celebrated the new year with photographs.
although that's pretty much how we celebrate everything!

the topic was "fluid".
i didn't really write anything to accompany my image.
i think it is because every time i hear the word
i am brought back to my early days as an archivist.
my first assignment was to scan and retouch transparencies
of andres serrano photographs... the body fluids series is beautiful,
but the subject matter is a bit disturbing!
i feel like that memory might have blocked my writing this week.

don't worry.

I like how people try to control things. It makes me laugh. Like water. No matter how many dams they put up, eventually water will go where it wants to go. Where it needs to go. Trying to impart any type of rigid rules into it is asking for trouble. Water is mean to flow. Instead of trying to control it, why don't we work with it. I try to live my life that way, flowing with what comes. I learned a long time ago that when I go against that principal, eventually my life will go right where it needs to go. So at any time, I'm exactly where I'm suppose to be.

a holiday gift for bulb followers

happy holidays to you all! here is a little token from baron & reynolds:

this weeks topic is "tangerine".

Any time I eat fruit, I think of the texture of the skin. No idea why. When Sarah said our project was Tangerine, I though of shooting everything Orange. Then anything fruit-ish that is growing (but in the winter, next to impossible), then I thought about taking my camera to the store and shooting the fruits and vegetable displays and quickly realized that the store management would frown upon that pretty quick. Especially when I bring in some speedlights and light stands. Instead I raided our fridge and captured the skin of various items. Noticing the all the differences was fascinating. How did the nicks get there or the scratches? The random brown spots. All the perfect imperfections.

i do not like citrus fruit. or fruit in general, for that matter.

i do like the color orange though.

i imagine that someone who likes tangerines would tell me that

an orange is not the same as a tangerine,

but i don't care.

i like orange and tangerines are orange.

as reynolds and i pile into our cars and prepare for our commutes,
we bid you a cheerful "good morning"!
reynolds has a far longer journey than i, as he passes through the mountains of regular and west virginias
on his way back to columbus.
i begin my day atop a surprisingly cold garage rooftop in uptown charlotte.
it is a remarkably quiet place at 6 in the morning
and it reminds me to upload and email my weekly photo submissions...

solitude a la reynolds & baron...

I've been an introvert my entire life. I once thought I was shy, and to a degree, around women, I am, but the truth is that I like being alone. With my thoughts to keep me company, I use that time to look inward and analyze who I am and what I've become. Lately, I've had nothing but time alone as I'm working in Columbus, Ohio, leaving my fiance and kids in Charlotte. Every weekend I go home because being away from them becomes harder and harder. I miss their energy, their presence. Walking into my apartment after spending the weekend with them sucks. So I hop in my car and think. I think about the foundation I am laying to provide for my family. I think about how much I like my car. I think about the photos I'd love to take along my route (one day I'm going to do it) and I think about how much I love my family. So much, I'm willing to sacrifice this time with them.

but i purchased a dustless pinhole body cap from
pinhole resource so my students could experiment with one of my favorite forms of photography!
the history of photo students at aich attempted digital pinhole out a few weeks ago
with beautiful results...

topic: ...it feels like a memory

Since I've relocated to Columbus, OH I've had to revert back to my winter ways. Scrapers, longer socks, boots, long sleeve shirts, layers. I haven't scraped snow and ice off of my car window in 6 years, so the other morning, out of habit, I jumped in my car one morning, put my things down, started my car and quickly realized I couldn't see through my windows due to the frosty covering. It brought me back to when I was a little dude, and watching my mom or dad get out of the car to scrape the windows while I sat inside the running car, doing my best to stay warm. I'd look at the patterns the snow and ice made while I shivered, until that loud scraping sound would wipe it all out, giving me a clear view of one of the two people who loved me most as a little kid. For a brief moment, I waited for that scraping sound.

i remember waiting for my dad to come home from work...
6 o'clock on the dot; by 6:15 he was in his swimsuit.

rambunctious, tossing, laughter, trampoline, splash
floating, skimming, balancing, smelling of chlorine

summers were fun as the family floated around.
winters were hollow as leaves replaced our tanned bodies.

you'd think i'd dislike the latter part of the year,
but i enjoy the bittersweetness of winter... it makes the memories that much sweeter.
